Preparing toddlers for success through early literacy

October 11, 2012 by DMD

Children’s emergent literacy skills at kindergarten entry predict reading abilities throughout their educational careers. To address these needs, early literacy in preschools and home environments is crucial. This year, Mother of Sorrows began a full-day preschool program for four year olds to better prepare children for future academic success.

Responding to the needs of the community and in partnership with the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame, Mother of Sorrows will begin the Early Literacy Program on Wednesday, October 17th. The Early Literacy Program will run until Christmas Break for toddlers (two and three years old) and their parents or caregivers. The purpose of this program is for participants to engage in story time and learn early reading skills that can be used at home. This will prepare toddlers for a smooth transition into preschool and provide parents with strategies to continue to use as the child grows.

This program will run weekly under the direction of Ms. Garcia (Vice-Principal). Resources for the program are provided due to the generous support of The Vanir Foundation. Continue to check our website for updates and photographs of the excited participants!
