March 17, 2014 by DMD

We invite you to read a few 2nd Grade class highlights from Mrs. Lopez, 2nd Grade Teacher:

Second grade is proud to present our projects. Please come out to see what we are learning this month.

Religion
Students are getting prepared for the season of Lent. We are making prayer books about our reflections of how we can get closer to Jesus. Students are learning how active Catholics prepare themselves for the death and resurrection of Christ.

Reading
Our class is learning the reading strategy in alignment with Common Core standards. Students are learning how to acknowledge differences in the point of view of characters, including by speaking in different voice.

Math
Students are learning the concept of vertical lines and horizontal lines. They learned how the world uses vertical/horizontal lines using the math concepts of lines and shapes.

Writing
Students are learning how to write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, including details to describe actions, thoughts and to provide a sense of closure to writing.

Science
Students are learning “The Scientific Process,” and are getting reading for the Science Fair. Students made an experiment using egg, water and salt. They are investigating what happens when salt is added to water.

Social Studies
Students are learning how the history of families from long ago and today has affected their lives. They asked questions about their ancestors. They also learned about their family by making a family tree, as well as by doing a timeline of their life. Students also had the opportunity to explore the history of long ago by going to the Natural History Museum.

Grammar
Students identified verbs in a sentence.

Art
Students did an art project where they incorporated justice and peace messages by doing art drawings.
