VMY members carry on tradition of Vincentian founders through prayer and service

March 20, 2015 by DMD

Members of the Mother of Sorrows Vincentian Marian Youth (or VMY) have joined together this school year to follow in the footsteps of our Vincentian founders: St. Vincent de Paul, St. Louise de Marillac and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. This year’s VMY includes eight students, seven 8th graders and one 5th grader, who gather every other Wednesday after school to carry out VMY’s mission of prayer and service.

Throughout Lent, VMY members have been gathering for daily prayer at 7:20 a.m. before school begins. Each morning, members offer their prayer for a special intention of the group’s choice. They then write that special intention on a note card, decorate the card, and tape the card to a wall near the MOS faculty room. Each day, VMY members are use the cards to form the shape of a cross on the wall. Take a few moments to stop by and see the prayer intentions VMY has offered so far this Lenten season!

VMY members will continue their morning prayer practice through Holy Week, and they invite anyone from the MOS family to join them in doing so. Also during Holy Week, VMY members will take part in a mini retreat with members of Mother of Sorrows’ Empowerment Group.

One of VMY’s most memorable experiences of the 2014-2015 school year was the group’s service project with Operation Christ Child. The 8th grade VMY members traveled to Huntington Beach with Mrs. Arvizu-Sotelo (group moderator) and Ms. Ferguson to help label, organize and wrap gift boxes people had donated to provide Christmas presents for children around the world.

VMY is looking forward to taking part in another service opportunity on April 26, when members will participate in St. Vincent Meals on Wheels’ 20th Annual Beach Bike/Walk-A-Thon in Santa Monica. VMY will be covering the registration fee of VMY members, but the members have voiced the desire to fundraise for the event, which will benefit St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. Stay tuned to learn about a VMY food sale leading up to the event! And please click here to learn more about the Beach Bike/Walk-A-Thon!
