Vanir Foundation and Vanir Construction Management “GenNext” members host field trip for MOS Engineering Club students

May 5, 2014 by DMD

Thank you to The Vanir Foundation in Memory of H. Frank Dominguez and to members of Vanir Construction Management, Inc.’s GenNext group for organizing a recent field trip to the California Science Center for Mother of Sorrows students. The field trip, which took place March 21, provided the opportunity for seven 5th grade students to tour the Science Center, visit the Space Shuttle Endeavour and view the Imax film Hubble 3D.

All field trip attendees were students who have taken part in Mother of Sorrows’ Engineering Club. Through Engineering Club, MOS students participate in Engineering is Elementary (or EiE), a program that draws upon the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects to introduce elementary-age students to basic engineering concepts.

Through funding from The Vanir Foundation, Mother of Sorrows was able to purchase the EiE program in 2010. Since then, more than 30 MOS students have enjoyed learning about engineering and conducting experiments as part of the EiE program to create things such as simple machines, bridges, solar ovens and windmills.

We have been grateful for the dedication, time and enthusiasm of multiple Vanir Ambassadors from Vanir Construction Management, Inc. who have been involved in leading EiE groups since 2013. We are also grateful to the GenNext group for allowing our Engineering Club students to expand their engineering knowledge beyond the walls of MOS through the fun and educational field trip.
