January 4 – Feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

January 4, 2013 by DMD

Today, January 4, the Mother of Sorrows School community celebrates the Feast Day of one of our Vincentian founders and role models, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was born August 28, 1774 in New York City and died January 4, 1821. She is the American foundress of the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for which she adapted the rule of the French Daughters of Charity. This community united with the International Daughters of Charity community in 1850. She also established Saint Joseph’s Academy and Free School for girls, which is credited for paving the way for the parochial school system in the United States. Although our school community is unable to celebrate this day together in person (as we are currently away from school on Christmas vacation) we unite – along with the rest of our Vincentian family around the world – in prayer to give thanks for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s life and example. We look forward to honoring her after we return to school on January 7, 2013.
