Starting in October 2012, the Mother of Sorrows Academic Decathlon Team began to prepare for their competitive season. Students prepared for the Team Logic Quiz, Individual Quizzes in various subjects, and for the always exciting Team Super Quiz.
In the Logic Quiz, students compete as a team to complete 20 mind-boggling logic puzzles in 50 minutes. In order to prepare, students practice working individually and in pairs to identify their personal strengths and weaknesses in order to best support their team.
In Individual Quizzes, students compete individually in the following subjects: Religion, Fine Arts, English, Literature, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Current Events. Only one student from each school can compete, so students from Mother of Sorrows first competed against one another to win a spot.
In the Super Quiz, students compete as a team in five subject areas: Religion, Fine Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Literature. If you have never experienced a Super Quiz, it is the most exciting to watch.
On February 9th, the Mother of Sorrows Academic Decathlon Team participated in the Deanery 16 Academic Decathlon at Serra High School. The team competed and performed as follows:
- Camila Solorio – Logic Quiz (Captain), 1st Place in Individual Religion, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Jazmin Cruz Hernandez – Logic Quiz, 2nd Place in Individual Fine Arts, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz (Captain)
- Lisa Hall – Logic Quiz, Individual English, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Abigail Ibanez – Logic Quiz, 2nd Place in Individual Literature, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Elsie Cardoso- Logic Quiz, Individual Mathematics, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Jasmine Bonilla – Logic Quiz, 3rd Place in Individual Social Studies, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Chelsea Alvarez – Logic Quiz, Individual Current Events, and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Emely Garcia – Logic Quiz and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
- Marbella Trujillo – Logic Quiz and 2nd Place in Super Quiz
On March 2nd, the Mother of Sorrows Academic Decathlon Team participated in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Academic Decathlon at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. The team competed and performed as follows:
