The Images of God in Third Grade

May 4, 2013 by DMD

In April, after months of preparation, third grade students spent a day of reflection and retreat at the Heart of Jesus Retreat Center with their teacher, Ms. Rosales, and Monsignor Joseph Brennan. The students returned with their hearts full of excitement for their Holy Communion in May.

On May 4th, the third grade class of Mother of Sorrows celebrated their First Holy Communion with the support and blessings of the school community. Monsignor Brennan celebrated the Mass.

During his homily, Monsignor Brennan invited several third grade students to open a gift that contained his favorite picture of God. Students were surprised to find an empty picture frame. Monsignor Brennan invited students to place their face in the frame, recognizing that they are the image of God. He reflected on how much he learned from the children when they were on retreat, whether it was their grace-filled spirit when they sang religious songs or their dedication and love for their parents. He invited all those present to remember how these children are truly images of God that we are blessed to see each day.

We congratulate our third graders, their families and friends, and their teacher, Ms. Rosales, on this monumental step on their spiritual journeys.
