September 27: Feast of St. Vincent de Paul

September 27, 2013 by DMD

Today, September 27, the Mother of Sorrows School community joins with our greater Vincentian Family and the entire Catholic Church to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Vincent de Paul.

Mother of Sorrows students and faculty celebrated St. Vincent, our Vincentian founder and model of service and generosity to those in need, by coming together for prayer, reflection and service throughout the school day.

Our community began the day with a special prayer to St. Vincent, and an offering of blankets for our school-wide blanket drive. For this blanket drive, each MOS family was invited to donate one new or gently used blanket in honor of St. Vincent. Mother of Sorrows will in turn donate all the blankets we have collected to Dolores Mission Parish, which provides outreach to men, women and children who are homeless.

The feast day celebrations continued with visits from “St. Vincent” to each classroom, in which 8th grader Alen (who dressed as St. Vincent de Paul), spoke about St. Vincent’s life and commitment to serving others.

Later on in the day, students from each grade participated in an activity with students from their “Buddy Class.” The activity focused on the idea of hands of service and included a chance for students to consider how St. Vincent shared his helping hands to benefit others, and how they themselves can use their hands to do the same.

We invite you to join us in offering prayers of thanksgiving for St. Vincent, the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (the sisters who sponsor our school) and the entire Vincentian family throughout the world.
