A 4th Grade class update from Miss Marriott, 4th Grade teacher

February 21, 2014 by DMD

We invite you to read a few 4th Grade class highlights from Miss Marriott, 4th Grade Teacher:

The fourth grade class has been working hard on their standards for this year, and we encourage you to stop by the academic bulletin board and take a look at some of their work. The following units are currently being covered by our fourth grade students:

  • Religion: The students have been studying the meaning and importance of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes in class, as well as how these can be applied to their own lives.
  • Reading: Our reading classes have focused on our story structure standard. The students are able to read a grade-level text, identify the main elements of the story (characters, setting, problem/solution), identify a theme and describe the main events of a story.
  • Language Arts: The students have been working with the different parts of speech to improve their writing. In class, the fourth graders are in the beginning stages of writing their individual mission reports.
  • Math: In our math classes, we have been working with prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples, comparing fractions and word problems involving rate. The students also completed an investigation on reading and interpreting graphs.
  • Science: In our science classes, we have been focusing on Earth science as we study the types of rocks, as well as slow and fast changes made to the land. We are currently learning about how our Earth changes quickly due to events such as landslides and earthquakes.
  • Social Studies: The fourth graders have been studying the California missions during our social studies classes. After learning about why the missions were built, we have started to learn about the changes made to the missions after the Mexican War for Independence.
  • Art: In our art classes, the students have been working on paintings of their individual missions in lieu of building the missions. They have been learning about the use of acrylic paint on canvas to complete this project.
  • Music: Our music classes have been teaching the students about Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” in preparation for our field trip with third and fifth grade to the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The students have learned about his work and have been working in groups to make instruments of their own to be played for the class.
